The French Pass itself.

The French Pass seperates the mainland of the Marlborough Sounds from D'urville Island and is a short cut for smaller shipping to save them having to go around the island. Many, many boats have come to grief there and the occasional fool has tried to swim it, a couple successfully by all accounts. Unfortunately the tide was out when I was there and you probably won't be able to see from the pics but the current is immense.
